I've never been all-American. I've been mistaken for British, Korean, Chinese, West Indian, Indian, Puerto Rican. I don't do much to negate such assumptions of alienness, though I do speak fairly proper American English, wear flats, eat Thai food—oh, and read, which is practically unheard of for an African-American high school kid from Philadelphia. The only time I feel all-American is when I'm in denim.
